OK Darren, Let's say I basically have only ever heard the 'Yoshimi...' record. Where would you go from there? What's top 10 for Lips releases also ignoring their rarity etc. imagining they are all pressed forever in unlimited quantities.....

I think there have been enough pressings to make them easy enough to find. My top 5 are 1. Soft Bulletin 2. Transmissions From The Satellite Heart 3. Clouds Taste Metallic 4. Hit To Death In The Future Head 5. Embryonic All five of these sound completely different from each other and have been really important albums for me. I didn't really care for At War With The Mystics.

I'm not Darren, but I want to add my 2 cents.
I agree with Darren, but instead of Embryonic, I would put In A Priest Driven Ambulance. I would swap Clouds Taste Metallic with Soft Bulletin.
My top ten would be anything they released before Soft Bulletin...sorry Yoshimi.

I was really really REALLY into the flaming lips for a long time, but something happened around the time Yoshimi came out. I tried to like it, I really did, but it didn't do much for me. Wayne had some people close to him pass away, and then started playing with puppets.
soft bulletin and deserter's songs are both great albums.
The late 80's Flaming Lips albums are hit or miss, but they really hit their stride through the 90's.
Sorta like the Beastie Boys. Loved them up until Hello Nasty...everything after that I can live without.

Oh wow, Mercury Rev - great reference haven't thought about them in years. Have to try and revisit that record. well damn - maybe not until they reissue it - sheesh - www.discogs.com/sell/list?currency=USD&master_id=21353&ev=mb&format=VinylSame for the Beastie Boys with me - I think I quit around Hello Nasty as well. Still conflicted if Paul's Boutique and Ill Communication would just sit on the shelf because I'm not 20 anymore or I feel like I should still be into them, versus actually wanting to hear it. Is it too gimmicky looking back? I wonder how they see their back catalog. That's funny about the Lips Yoshimi - that was my first record with those guys and I think how wacky and polished it sounded was mind blowing at the time to me. Definitely listened to it a lot but didn't go back from there for some reason. Soft Bulletin is on it's way.

I forgot I totally know this Soft Bulletin record probably through osmosis from friends. I'm just realizing now I recognize most of this but don't think I put it together that it was these guys. They seem to really change a lot except for those vocals basically. Cool.
Have to move on to 'Clouds Taste Metallic' next.

That was a magical era for the band.
